[Grace-core] Teaching report

I gave a midterm in class yesterday and the results were overall quite good (though the exam might have been a bit easy). The median score was 44 out of 50, though I had two students (out of 18) who got around 25 out of 50. I've attached a copy of the exam if you'd like to take a look. The key thing going on now is that the students are working on three "test programs", programs that are designed to be treated as take-home exams (little or no help from me and nothing from anyone else). They cover material that they have already exercised in previous lab programs.

To make up for the fact that our error messages are sometimes unhelpful or misleading ("internal compiler error"), I told them that if they got an error message that made not sense I would try to translate it into something more reasonable. While I've had a few questions because of that, I've been surprised that I haven't gotten more requests. Of course, it's not due until Friday, so I anticipate I'll start getting a lot more questions soon.

If you are interested, the test programs are available at http://www.cs.pomona.edu/classes/cs051G/labs/tp1/tp1.pdf

The first is meant to be doable by anyone, while the others step up a bit in difficulty.

Kim
